We have had so much fun visiting Chester. Chester has Roman roots. The old Roman walls are still visible as is the amphitheater. We visited the Grosvenor Museum last week and learned the history as well as viewing many of the artifacts found during the many archaeological digs. We also visited St. John the Baptist's Church. It was a cathedral during the Middle Ages outside the city wall on the River Dee and is an active Anglican parish church. As we ventured inside, we heard live music: a violinist and a pianist.
The church was breathtaking and the photos do not do it justice. We were very lucky: there was a book sale going on while we were there. Of course, we had to see what was being offered. We bought several books and left very happy and satisfied.
As is our tradition when we visit new cities, we rode the Hop on/Hop Off bus. When we first boarded the bus, there only two more couples. It was great! We had our own personal tour guide, but when we got to the boat dock at the River Dee, it was decided to combine the buses and we had to transfer to the other bus. It was a bit of a let down, but we survived. Chuck and I have really enjoyed taking the bus into Chester. The bus stop is just across the street from where we're staying. For about $5.00 each for a round-trip ticket, we ride to the bus terminal and were able to walk, shop, and dine to our heart's content. Parking is very limited and can be expensive. Taking the bus was easy and it also gave Chuck the chance to view the landscape and scenery. (I haven't gotten up the courage to try to drive yet. I need a really big, empty lot so I can practice😊 and we haven't come across any of those yet.) From the top of our double decker tour bus, you see Chester from a new perspective. We also took a boat ride on the River Dee another wonderful way to see a city, in this case Chester, from a new vantage point. The street performers have captured our attention every time we have visited. The musicians are very talented as are the other performers. We saw a man covered in green paint portraying a statue. It's hard to describe, so here's a video of The Green Man.
Here is one of the performances we heard from the musicians.
Of course, we absolutely love the architecture and the cobblestone streets. We had cake and coffee and tea at a quaint little pub call The Albion. It was filled with World War I memorabilia. We ventured out the other night to visit Chester. It's even more magical at night. We stopped for an ice cream cone before heading back to Waverton Quays. We only have a few more days here before we leave for Horsham, which is near London. Chuck is at the garage today making sure Frankie, our little Renault Clio, is in perfect running order. She's had a bit of a cough recently and we just want to make sure she gets the care she needs. Update: Chuck is back from the garage with Frankie. She feels much better now and is ready for the journey to Horsham.
We're going to miss Chester and our walks with Poppy along the Waverton Quays Canal but we're heading to Horsham in just a little while. London, here we come!
